Extended Master Data
For the multi-company enterprise, Dynamics AX already has functionality to share tables across multiple companies using "Virtual" companies. However, sharing a table implies sharing all its fields, which can become a cumbersome task since fields often refer to other tables. These other tables may not be shared and consequently have to be shared as well or need to be maintained manually, but they also may be containing data which is not common between companies. Examples could be sharing an item table, but having different item groups per company or nationality. Or sharing the customer table, but needing different payment terms, tax codes, etc..
Challenges:
- Single source or entry of common data across enterprise with the need for flexibility between companies or nationalities
- Difficult to setup and maintain "Virtual" company structure or customize field level sharing, because sharing means sharing all, not just part of common data
To fully take advantage of the multi-national, multi-company capabilities of Dynamics AX you need the Extended Master Data application.
Ideal Solution:
- Maintain single source for common data across enterprise and provide flexibility between companies and nationalities
- Avoid nationality conditions and simplify the security model
- Replicates additions or changes to attached companies, called "child companies"
- Provides field level sharing for company or country localizations
